A day in the life of an audio visual junkie
2 Nov
I wasn’t even planning to post about Britney’s latest album but since she mentions the Philippines I guess I’ll return the favor.
In her latest album entitled “Blackout”, Britney Spears mentions the Philippines as part of the refrain of her track entitled “Piece of Me”. It’s track #2 of the album, right after “Gimme More” so it’s not hard to miss.
I’m Miss American Dream since I was 17
Don’t matter if I step on the scene
Or sneak away to the Philippines
There still gon’ be pictures of my derrière in the magazine
You want a piece of me?
You want a piece of me…
Listen to the track here:
I couldn’t find any articles of her ever being to the Philippines. I can’t even recall if she’s ever held a concert here. She probably has been here at least once. I wonder how she thought of the country?
She probably only used the word “Philippines” for the rhyme. Now that I think about it what other country rhymes with “scene” and “magazine”? But thank you anyway Britney for even thinking about our country
Now onto her album “Blackout”:
It’s pure party from track 1 to 14. The tracks are more Euro-club than anything and feature a blend of electronica, club, and disco music styles. Taking a look at the full track listing (see below), it appears that Miss Spears has had participation in only 3 tracks, with the rest being credited a mix of European and American song writers and producers.
There are about two tracks with rap in them but it’s not too hip-hoppish. There aren’t any ballads, slow, or mellow songs either. Many of the tracks in this new album could have come straight out of Gwen Stefani’s “Sweet Escape” album. I would even dare say that she could have been inspired by Gwen Stefani’s style.
Overall it’s a well made album. Throw the tracks at random into your playlist for a good dance beat. Unless you’re a Britney fan I wouldn’t recommend listening to this album end to end. I find myself fatigued after listening to just a few tracks to lack of variance in style. This album is also very loud, with an overall replay gain of -10, so be careful or you might hurt your ears. But then again every album that comes out nowadays seem to be mixed at replay gain -10 and above.

Parteeh!
Update: found a direct download link. Download Britney Spears - Blackout full album while it lasts.

yes she did sneak to the Philippines. she went to amanpulo palawan, like many hollywood stars that has been there, but the media doesn’t know! why i know..it’s a secret!!!
Comm’on, e tayo nga nagsisiraan.
Kahit nga tayo we turn down Indians bilang mababaho, didi they react bad? Tayo lang ang ubod ng sourgraper!
Pede ding ginamit niya ang term na “Philippines” in that song because in one show, I think it was “Jessica Soho” or (a documentary show in GMA7…. ) it was a show about papparazzi’s and it was featured that paparazzi’s here in the Philippines are more forgiving to celebrities and maybe, Britney refers to the escape from paparazzi and meeting nice ones for a change.
I don’t know. It’s just an opinion…
sabi nila its just a rhyme… well! think of it… songs do really need to have a rhyme… pero in rhyming chose the best, i mean… if ur a writer… ang daming pwedeng mag rhyme sa magazine,,, bakit Philippines pa! Diba?
another one, if u want to get the attention of the World… choose the Philippines,,, dba, tayong Pinoy,,, kalat na sa buong mundo….
Just mension the word Philippines on media,,, boom ka agad!!! and the reaction…..
u know…. there are countries that are not known…. parang ganito un,,, what country is that, not familiar…. but the Philippines…. kilalang kilala…..
about the Pikon part or the KSP daw….. the right term for that is Palaban, We Pinoys have pride, ayaw nating naaapi….
U know “dont mess with us”.
The best country tlaga ang Pinas…. in other countries,,, work work work…. they work day and night… sa Pinas, may time ka para mag saya…
about the government, Im not affected….
masyado lang nagrereact ung iba…. sige magrali ng magrali kyo… basta dto lang ako, il do my work, live my peaceful life…
about d people….. mababait tayo,,, ang mga pinoy,,, totoo tayo, pero di lahat ha,,, sa ibang bayong ng prutas laging may ilang bulok…. pero tayo talaga ang pinakamababait….
Pinoy Ako!!!
I’m a Filipino, an Australian residence presently living and working in Australia. In my understanding “sneak- away to the Philippines” means - as we all know, Philippines is paparazzi free. Philippines is a great hide away no doubt about that.
I love the Philippines being talked about whether good or bad, a kinda superstar! To all Filipinos, we must be proud of our country. Love ya all.
PS.
Please surf Camiguin Island.
thanks Dennison Uy.
Britney says sumtin bout d philippines in her song jas coz she was bollox and didnt know wat ta write soo she didnt fukin bother write anitin soo she prefered philippines..
diwata, like you, i’ve been living in north america for many years. for the most part, i think it’s our resilience and quirky sense of humour that allow us to survive the lifestyle here, if nothing else. yes, i agree that it’s crazy out here, and if we didn’t have the mindset we have, we would probably “pull a britney”. no one in north america needs to be a celebrity to be all maxed out. i guess my beef is with people like blogger1, who think that people from the first world have innate superiority just by accident of birth. it rankles a lot that asians have to go through a ridiculous amount of crap just to have our education and experience recognized here. i’ve worked with people from many parts of the world, and i know from experience that we can hold our own. and yes, if i didn’t have a huge chunk of my life already invested here, i’d probably take the next flight back home, for good.
im filipino but a U.S. citizen i grew up in both countries so i can say that i have an un-biased opinion.
i interpret the lyrics as Britney referring to our country as a place to get away.
no not a place to hide or get away with crimes duh.
i think she means a place to relax, a paradise where all people are friendly, where people greet you with warm smiles. a place where all the stress can be diminished.
honestly life here in the US isnt easy, i am a normal citizen and not a celeb but there is still great pressure due to work, utangs and all the other things u have responsibility of.
i always tell my friends, “hay naku kailangan ko ng bakasyon!!! gsto ko ng umuwi sa pinas!!!”
sa totoo lng minsan gsto ko ng iwan lahat ng kailangang gawin tulad ng work at lahat ng bills coz i need to take a breather
when the Philippines comes into mind i think of Good times, laid back, stress free, relaxation, the natural beauty our country has..
u cant blame us if sometimes we just want to “escape” from this stress driven place.
she meant she wanted to sneak away from everything thats causing her pain and be in a place where the peoples friendly smiles are enough to remind her of who she really is.
coz like many filipinos who are here, minsan due to all the working their asses off, we forget who we are and we forget how to smile
go pinay!!
who is britney spears again?
as for blogger1, you can go to @#&*!!!!!
okay guys. apparently, 3 swedish songwriters wrote the lyrics of britney’s song, ‘piece of me.’ that has nothing to do with britney. she probably doesn’t even know where the philippines is. (and they say non-filipinos are intelligent? uhmmmm….?). as for the swedish writers, they might have picked the philippines just because, geographically, it’s far enough from the u.s. for an american celebrity to ’sneak away’ to. unfortunately for them, they didn’t do their homework. if they did, they might have found out that while the u.s. is an ocean away from the philippines, we have 100 years of history as close ‘allies’ (and i use the term ‘allies’ very loosel here) by virtue of the philippines being an american colony beginning the turn of the 20th century, when the u.s. bought the philippines from spain. no american celebrity can sneak away to the philippines. we just know everybody, as we’re inundated with american crap every single day of our lives. as for the idiot who said filipinos cannot equal the ‘intellect’ of ‘outsiders,’ read up, buddy. obviously, you don’t know what you’re talking about. it’s easy ti see that people say stupid things out of ignorance. to this idiot and all his ilk, educate yourselves and travel more. maybe if you get a chance to experience other cultures, you would stop being bigots. intelligence has no nationality. obviously, the same goes for bigotry, stupidity, and ignorance. get it?
i think what she meant in the lyrics is that if she plans to be on the scene or even if she sneak away and goes here in the Philippines, people even here in the Philippines still have her dirty pictures. maybe she thinks she’s controversial anywhere even here in the Philippines people will still recognize her if she goes here. that’s my opinion only. she’s not trying to insult. she’s just saying that even here we have her pictures and she is known here.
here goes the filipino pride! it really shows that we feel insecure of our race.
i agree with dennison uy’s last comment, by the way. also, with Albrecht. The One is an insecure one - thinking bout the negatives. tsktsk
bout the desperate housewives?.. it is really our (the government; the philippines) fault why our medical professionals are at stake. if it werent for the PRC or the corrupt officials and citizens who cheat all the time to satisfy their greed, then we would not be a joke to the world. if our government is legitimate, then our nurses, doctors, etc. would simply be trusted.
back to britney, the writers (whom britney is not included) used ‘philippines’ bcoz it rhymed with ’scene’. obvious naman eh! theres no way that it is an insult to us, unless you feel insecure. oh well, whatever britney does, she still makes an issue out of it. she is still the great britney. thus, i like to think of her coming over here in the philippines
@blogger1
I have generally ignored most of the comments on this post as I am neither a Britney fan nor am I too fond of responding to trolls but I think that you, Sir, may be a bigot.
I am sorry to hear that you got scammed, but where money is involved I believe humans are the same everywhere regardless or nationality, race or gender.
Based on your response, am I correct to assume that you are from the U.S.? I had U.S. based law firms as clients and just by looking at the types of cases being served in your country, I say that the situation over there and over here is none the different. I myself am a victim of money laundering perpetrated by an American. I got scammed by an American named Charisse Johnson. You can look her up yourself, but it is a class-action lawsuit and many people around the world were scammed, though thankfully the justice system in the U.S. is more mature and efficient so I am hoping that with the law I can recoup much of what I have lost
I call into question the integrity of this Filipina whom you refer to as “educated”. In my personal experience, educational achievement or social status does little in the area of personality development.
I challenge you to name the school that she went to, and that reveal more details surrounding your relationship such as how and where you met her, and the length of your relationship. It is simply not enough to rank somebody’s intelligence based on gut feel.
Though I am inclined to believe that education has some degree of influence, my personal stand is that it all boils down to the social experience — starting with the smallest of these societies, the family, up to the everyday interactions with friends, schoolmates, fellow workers, up to the people whom you do not know but interact with everyday — the security guard, the jeepney driver, the bus conductor, the peddler on the street, the beggar, the sidewalk vendor.
I am not sure what made you think that Filipinos are “masters of text”, and I am not sure why you think Filipinos cannot equal “outside intellects”. I am more of the belief that all human beings are equal in every personal dimension regardless of location, and that Filipinos are as much an “outsider” to you as you are to them.
What the hell did Miki say? hmmm…possibly didnt like the truth coming out.
I had a contract signing go very bad and the people had outright lied to me…not misled, but actually lied. The contract was different than all the negotiations. What to do? Same thing you always do, have a new one drawn up and ask why they did that……………..and that’s where I learned that it’s really common here, the Fils, to act like you dont understand the question, dont even bother denying it, or in language cases - just look to the side and cease to speak english.
But after living here for a year, I have to admit that even the most educated of Fils get really sensitive if any foreigners come close to berating the intellect of a local. I had the most educated filipina I know stop talking to me because I didn’t text her random crap during the day. Not only educated, but also has a natural intelligence that I actually feel comfortable with. But in her mind, texting is a valid social necessity…and all the other girls around here agreed and also chastised me.
I would expect that from a province child, not a modern person and especially not from an educated adult.
So, when a country on the backside of tech innovation becomes master of the text and thinks themselves equal to outside intellects because of something that is nothing more than a toy in other countries…(much less any more important than a digital post-it-note)……well, it wasn’t the outsiders that created these culture, erm…um…idio-synchronies.
In English:
Be patient with Filipinos because sometimes we can really become attention seekers!
Miki, take it easy!
i find the deeper readings into Britney Spears’ lyrics to be ridiculous. do you think she actually writes this shit? or knows anything about the politics in the Philippines (i’m referring to The One’s reply above). good god.
@oh please
If you are referring to the Desperate Housewives incident, then it is not without merit.
Here’s a clip of what I’m talking about:

I believe Filipinos or any race or group that gets branded negatively should have every right to be insulted, especially since the livelihood of Filipino medical professionals are at stake. Stigma is very hard to erase. The cloud of bad juju takes a while to clear, and you can see how it has haunted both countries until now.
americans are just jealous…..they think that they monopolize the whole world
FILIPINOS! Shut the fuck up and leave this song alone!!! you guys are just so friggin stupid (or just want attention). you ALWAYS make a big deal out of every US show that mentions your country. PATHETIC!!! you have other problems to think about!!!!!
back to the song…
i think it’s more of an insult, too.
like.. i saw a comment from a Filipino (britney.com)
i have nothing against whoever posted (or even britney for that matter?), but it is not nice for me to hear that Piece of Me is the next single especially because our country Philippines had been mentioned in the song.
i just mentioned. XD
britney .. gotta be kiddin Lol
f!nch’s last blog post..Googlegangers II
actually,, why are you making this as a big deal? its just a song and britney just wants her song to rhyme and its just that she picked the philippines for it to rhyme with the word scene and magazine. so what’s the big deal. filipinos should not make this as a big deal and put ‘other interpretation’ for this song. just be happy that your country is there on the song.
honestly, when will britney spears and all these other celebretards stop walking around like such idiots?
Filipinos should not be too sensitive…
I agree, Filipinos are as guilty as everyone else when it comes to racism.
I know this first hand because I am a Filipino-Chinese who grew up attending a Filipino Catholic grade school and high school. I would sometimes get teased about my ancestry “Instik beho tulo laway”. Some of my Filipino-Chinese classmates has had it worse they would not just get teased but get bullied and humiliated in class as well.
For a country that loves to laugh I find it quite irritating that the Philippines is also a country that is most impatient about cultural issues.
Is it just me or Filipinos tend to overreact all the time?
Suprisingly, not one Filipino have noticed that the Philippines was mentioned in Ugly Betty Season one. Here’s the line between Marc and Betty
Marc: So you are from the Philippines
Betty: No, I’m from Queens
Marc: Whatever, both end in -ines/-eens
If Ugly Betty is popular in the Philippines, there’d probably be street protests because they will interpret it as if Ugly Betty writers intend to say that Filipinas are ugly. Luckily, it’s not really popular.
Are we not guilt of our own slurs, too? This might be familiar to many Filipinos>
Isn’t that a mockery of the Japanese culture? Or maybe, in old Filipino films where ninjas are depicted at stupid insane people who can’t speak straight Tagalog?
@The One: ouch, was harsh, but you have made a good point. Never did see it that way!
Britney’s music can be good, but it can never be great.
Great music needs no listener to be heard, just like the symphony of the universe!
[…] Britney wants to sneak away into the Philippines. Due to this infamous line, a lot of critics and local supporters have expressed their own […]
Stating Philippines in Britney’s song “Piece of Me” is more of an insult to me.
You know why Britney wants to sneak away in the Philippines? It’s not because it rhymes with the word scene or magazine. Here’s a more logical reason: people outside our country thinks that most of the crimes done here in the Philippines aren’t solved. Meaning, one can definitely run away from the crimes they’ve done. Just try analyzing the whole lyrics of the song. The idea of running away from all shame done. It’s more of applying the literature (subject) side of the poems/songs I studied.
I loved Britney’s songs. But this really disappointed me.
Okay. How did I end up with that conclusion besides the literature analysis? I grew up in the Philippines and have stayed in US and have also been in other countries. I somehow able to compare what the general perceives in our country.
By the way, I don’t only go with the beat of the music but also the message it brings. This is how I conclude a great music.
Now, I definitely wouldn’t like a piece of her (anymore)!
I absolutely agree on that point of view.
It’s hard to make a decent review when there is a lot of bias and stigma attached to an artist like Britney and for many people, it is hard to take the artist out of their minds when listening to music.
Britney is simply the face recording companies put to sell albums and it’s a formula that has worked time and again. Full credit should be given to the sound engineers for coming up with good beats and mixes. You can erase Britney’s singing from every track and you’ll end up with good Euro-club beats.
Like I always say, listen to music for the sake of music.
It’s a badly reviewed album, though. It kinda interests me for the lyrics but I guess she was just looking for a word that rhymes with “eeen”. Like that of Ugly Betty, where that gay guy wording out “Philippines” instead of “Queens” because they just rhyme and all.
Or perhaps he was referring to a slum, third world suburban atmosphere towards Queens which he found at the international image of the Philippines. Hahaha.
