Itchyworms celebrates 15 years of music, friendship, and launghter
Itchyworms celebrated its 15th birthday on November 25, 2011 at Metrobar, West Ave. Quezon City. The band that brought Pinoy hits such as “Akin Ka Na Lang”, “Beer”, and “Antipara” started in 1996 as a college band in Ateneo de Manila University.
The band’s original line-up had Kelvin Yu playing lead guitar and Hadrian “Haji” Cruz on bass. A year later Cruz left to focus on his studies, and Chino Singson was recruited from the Ateneo Musicians’ pool to become the lead guitarist. Since then, the group has been solid with Jugs Jugueta as lead vocalist playing rhythm guitar, Jazz Nicolas on drums, Kelvin Yu on bass and Chino Singson on lead guitar.
Sessionista Ronnie Dizon joined Itchyworms during this special day to be their guest keyboardist. The event was graced by the presence of celebrity musician Pepe Smith who made a surprise entrance, much to everyone’s delight. According to the group, they hope one day to collaborate and make music with him.
During the show, photos and videos from the band’s archive were being played onstage. Through the years their sound and appearance may have changed, but one thing that remained constant is the group’s fondness for good humor. With a wacky name like “Itchyworms”, the group never fails to make funny poses and humorous remarks – much to the enjoyment of the spectators. Wherever they may be, expect Itchyworms to entertain fans everywhere with music and lots of laughter.
According to Jugs, Itchyworms has only been in the music industry for 10 years. The first five years were spent when they were playing in college. The group has released five full-length albums and produced numerous hit singles and music videos, capturing the heart (and ears) of Filipinos everywhere.
The celebration lasted way past midnight. For more than two and a half hours the group played at least 16 songs, not counting the encore “Penge Naman Ako N’yan“. When the show was over the audience went into a cheering competition shouting “more!” “sample” and “low batt”. To which Itchyworms gladly obliged by playing once more. It was one crazy and fun night that ended in a high note.
Congratulations Itchyworms for 15 years of music!
