As web professionals one of the things we have to deal with at one point in time is obtaining a web host. For many clients on a budget, shared web hosting is an ideal solution to their web hosting needs. Given the number of web hosting providers out there, deciding on a web host for the first time may prove to be a daunting task. Mind you, even web veterans sometimes need guidance in locating a new, better hosting provider.

This is where web hosting guides like Web Hosting Choice come into play.

Web Hosting Choice provides an extensive, searchable database of over 300 service providers and thousands of web hosting plans. Each listing contains the following pertinent information:

• Cost
• Set up fee
• Disk space
• Monthly data transfer (bandwidth) allocation
• Operating system
• Database type (MS SQL, MySQL, etc)

Finally, each entry has a rating associated with it, though the site does not provide any information on how the listings are being rated.

It would probably be helpful if the site provided a way to comment and rate each entry, so that visitors can provide personal feedback as well. An “uptime” field would probably also be useful, though in my experience everyone and their mom likes to put 99% uptime guaranteed when in reality downtimes are an unavoidable experience of web hosting. Like what they say, shit happens, so don’t count on it.
