Latest Mckinsey survey confirms: thirty is the new forty

mckinsey-quarterly-january-2008.PNG

According to the McKinsey Quarterly survey released January 2008, for a great majority of executives the events “that have had the most profound effect on their careers” originated “largely at work, not from family considerations or changed personal aspirations”, and that “the single most pivotal event in their careers occurred when they were around the age of 30, after they had spent about eight years in the workforce”.

Personally, I’m still waiting for this “single most pivotal event”.

Well, I’ve already seen Brandon Boyd in person but I still haven’t met Thom Yorke in the flesh. Maybe I’ll just wake up one day, all rich and famous.

But then again people close to me know that my dreams are as simple as having one house in Baguio or Tagaytay and another one by the beach. Okay, a really big house. Okay, more like a mansion. Fine, I want my own island too.

I’m still waiting. Anytime now.

In the meantime, let’s all listen to “Videotape” from Radiohead.

Reuben Gonzaga PBB footage

The comedian from Davao garnered 506,402 text votes or 32.17%, making him PBB Celebrity Edition Season 2’s Big Winner, followed by beauty queen Riza Santos (430,135 text votes or 27.33%) on second place, car racer Gaby dela Merced (406,892 text votes or 25.5%) on third place, and finally by model Will Devaughn (230,509 text votes or 14.65%) on fourth.

This makes Ruben Gonzaga the first male winner of the Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) reality show. All winners thus far have been women: Nene Tamayo (Season 1), Keanna Reeves (Celebrity Edition Season 1), Kim Chiu (Teen Edition), and Beatriz Saw (Season 2).

For a detailed coverage and more photos check out this article from the official website.

Ruben Gonzaga is of pure heart and I was personally banking him to win. I am very happy that he did, although Riza, Gaby, and Will are all winners to me. Congratulations Ruben, Riza, Gaby, and Will!

Update: now with videos!

Spam karma

Every now and then I get spam either in my mailbox or in this blog’s comment section that I would seriously like to snap back at but of course they will never get it because these were probably done by bots.

Anyway I thought hey I could have fun ragging on them and at the same time send some negative juju their way … so anyway here goes:

Hey Asia travel! first of all I would like to thank you for the link bait! If your spam bot grew a brain maybe he would realize that you were commenting on a nonsense post that has very little to do with the cost of travel in Asia. You may want to know that your comment got automatically sent to my spam bin, which means that 1) it never saw the light of day and 2) your automated link baiting WordPress site is already blacklisted by Akismet’s filters, which means it won’t be too long before your site gets flushed down the drain by Google. Good riddance.

Radiohead releases 7th full album In Rainbows as free download

Radiohead - In Rainbows

After four years of silence Readiohead has finally released their 7th album, In Rainbows, as a name-your-price download on their website.

In terms of digital income, we’ve made more money out of this record than out of all the other Radiohead albums put together, forever — in terms of anything on the Net. And that’s nuts. It’s partly due to the fact that EMI wasn’t giving us any money for digital sales. All the contracts signed in a certain era have none of that stuff.

The Immortals: Fifty Greatest Artists of All Time

Rolling Stone - The Immortals cover

The second he sang the opening lines — “Close your eyes, and I’ll kiss you” — the crowd’s reaction was so intense that it all but drowned the song out … I understood in that moment one of the reasons why the Beatles had to stop performing. The songs weren’t theirs anymore. They were everybody’s.

Elvis Costello on The Beatles

Celebrating the “fiftieth anniversary of rock” (so rock was “invented” in uh, 1957? duh!), Rolling Stone magazine is running a special issue listing the top 50 (rock and roll) artists of all time, with a write-up on each artist by a fellow artist who may have worked with them in the past.

Here’s that list:

Theo Jansen: Modern Day DaVinci Genius?

He calls himself a “Kinetic sculptor”.

For the past fifteen years, Theo Jansen has been creating (growing?) “beach animals” made from commonly available tools like plastic tubing, cardboard boxes, plastic bottles, hose, tape, and all sorts of other stuff.

Watch the clip and be amazed.

Microsoft’s Website Displays Cross-Browser Errors

Looks like even Microsoft’s own website is not free from cross-browser display issues. While I was browsing this page the other day, I could not help but notice a couple of issues which appear to exist in all browsers except for Microsoft’s Internet Explorer.

This is how the page looks like, rendered properly in Internet Explorer 6 and 7 (click on thumbnail for full size):

  • Downgrading A Paypal Premier Account To Personal

After writing about PayPal’s expensive upkeep, I have decided to downgrade my first PayPal account to a Personal one. My plan is to open another PayPal account and make that a Premier / Business account instead, which should be no problem because a UnionBank E-On Visa Electron account only costs 300 Pesos / year, and I am loosing a whole lot more than that for every Premiere PayPal transaction.

To do this, I first logged into PayPal and clicked on Contact Us > Contact Customer Service. Then, I selected My Account > Changing Account Type and typed in something to the effect of “Please downgrade my Premier Account to a Personal one”.

After one week, my account was downgraded and I received this e-mail:

Shopping spree at eBay with my PayPal

I just went on a shopping spree over at eBay with my PayPal. It was so quick and easy compared to when I had to make purchases with just a CC. Thank you, Paypal, for finally supporting the Philippines :)

    FilipinoTravel

While I was trying to reserve tickets for my cousin I encountered the following message from FilipinoTravel.com’s online reservation form:

(If inside village or beyond Metro Manila +Php 200. We strictly do not accept delivery beyond Metro Manila)

So does this mean that they do not accept delivery, unless we bribe them with 200 pesos?
