Ateneo de Manila University seal

UP and ADMU makes it to the list of top 500 schools in the world, according to the 2007 rankings published by The Times Higher Education Supplement (THES) and Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). The two are the only Philippine schools to make the list, with UP ranking at 398 and ADMU at 451.

This is a huge improvement for my alma mater ADMU, which ranked a lowly 484 a year ago. While this is good news for the two schools, this is bad news for the Philippine educational sector in general. This means that that the local educational system has a very long way to go before we can be considered world class. UP, the country’s best, could only rank around 400, while Ateneo is barely hanging in there at 451. Being an Ateneo alumnus I can say that we definitely have a long way to go before we are even at par with the top universities in Tokyo or the U.S. Other Philippine schools will need to work even harder to make it to the list, and that is saying a lot because UST and LaSalle can definitely make that list.

Here’s to looking forward to better results for 2008.
