In an effort to simplify Bayan Telecommunications’ (Bayan) IT infrastructure, the telecom company selected Dell’s enterprise solutions for its server consolidation and virtualization project to maintain optimal operations for all Bayan Centers and enterprise users throughout the Philippines.
The investment proved highly beneficial to Bayan as it delivered lower TCO (total cost of ownership) and continues to generate savings for the company. “By simply combining the server consolidation, storage consolidation and server virtualization projects, we have saved around P20 million as of year-end 2010 in hardware/software maintenance agreements and licensing costs,” said Reggie de Leon II, chief information officer, Information Technology Division, Bayan Telecommunications, Inc.
Bayan deployed Dell PowerEdge M1000e modular blade enclosures with Dell PowerEdge M610 and M910 blade servers, and PowerEdge R710 rack servers to run mission-critical applications such as CRM (Customer Relationship Management) solutions, a centralized database server, mediation servers (transactional/billing), revenue assurance and interconnect servers.
Power efficiency
In addition, the telecom company was also challenged by the power loading of its data center which was already utilizing 87% of the total UPS (uninterrupted power supply) capacity. After installing 13 Dell blade servers and 3 Dell enclosures, Bayan discovered that Dell servers have power management features and was able to reduce 7% on the UPS’ load utilization.
“Dell exceeded all our expectations. Dell’s Enterprise Blade Servers deliver enhanced power management, clean and uncluttered cable management, single console administration, quiet and efficient cooling designs,” said De Leon. “Aside from those, Dell also provided us higher uptime availability, more than the service level agreements that we originally committed. We have not had any hardware problem for almost 2.5 years now.”
“Server consolidation and virtualization are key technologies that can help customers address challenges that result from a company’s business maturity and growth. We continually provide our customers with the right solutions and relevant technology to help them achieve optimal operations with significant cost savings,” said Ricky Lopez, country manager, Commercial business, Dell Philippines.
The telecom firm’s data center connects 61 Bayan sites and its corporate customers nationwide. It is faced with providing high uptime availability for its fast-growing number of subscribers and expanding network coverage from Metro Manila, Luzon, Naga, Legazpi, Tacloban and Davao.
