I have been spending quite some time logged into Facebook lately and I noticed a trend where certain links with shocking images are posted. Clicking on the link will take you to a spam page where you are supposed to complete a series of tasks before taking you to the actual “shocking” video. Usually the page would require that you do the following:
- Click the Facebook like button (most likely to keep spreading the spam page)
- Click the Facebook share button (again, to spread the spam page)
- Complete some survey (most likely to generate some $$ for the creator)
I hate spam sites as much as I hate p3n1s enlargement and v1@gr@ spam e-mail. One of these pages is the site bannedfromtvufc dot info. Sometimes there really is no video, such as the site myheartbeat-tv dot co dot cc. Due to my personal dislike for the spammy nature of these sites, I am not linking to them, but if you are curious you can still visit the site by typing the addresses directly on your browser.
It really annoyed me. For one, I dislike hijack tactics used by spammers to generate hits and income. Second, I really wanted to watch the video. Turns out that all it took was a simple Google search, and voila, I was able to view the video without having to log in to Facebook. No spammy liking and sharing required.
I found the video thanks to some genius who came up with a way to capitalize on these spam pages by posting the content for free, allowing surfers to bypass the spam page. It’s like Robin Hood, stealing from the thieves, getting some for himself in the process. Very creative.
