180 Microcinema Film Festival is an online short film festival that challenged filmmakers to tell a compelling story in just three minutes while engaging an online audience. These filmmakers showcased their 180-second entries on the festival site http://180cinema.net, and shared by viewers through various social media platforms.
42 festival film entries had a tight competition with one another – and with the extended voting period for the Audience Choice award, viewers still got a chance to select and share their favorite films. In addition to these votes, viewers were also free to leave their comments on the films on the festival website.
“Munting Alay” (A Small Offering) by a Filipino, Jose Chavez was awarded as the 2012 Narrative Cycle Audience Choice Winner. The 2012 Jury’s Choice Winner was “Table 7” by Marko Slavnic & Andrew McDonald. Each of the two winners received a prize worth USD 15,000 in cash and a transmedia development deal. This amount will be used as the filmmaker’s pitch fund for a 30-part Serial Cinema Project, which will have the winning filmmaker create a movie of 30 180-second parts, with one installment posted on the website each day; the culmination of this project will then be a 90-minute full feature-length film also viewable online.
Knowledgeable judges who determined the Jury’s Choice Winner were: 2011 Academy Award-winning producer Stefanie Walmsley, Isabel Henderson who is a Hollywood producer and production manager and Peter R. Kirk who is an Australian director, screenwriter.
The awarding ceremony for the 180 Microcinema Festival was held last April 21, 2012 in Makati, Philippines. The ceremony was the culmination of a day-long event featuring key speakers and the festival judges, who discussed digital filmmaking and production in today’s new media landscape.
