Eng Bee Tin, the bakeshop from Chinatown Manila known for its famous ube flavored hopia and tikoy has unveiled what is said to be the biggest mooncake in the Philippines.
The Philippines largest mooncake measures 24 inches diameter (75 inches circumeference) and is 3 inches high. In comparison, a regular mooncake is only 3 inches in diameter. It can be seen at the Asia Food Expo at the World Trade Center and at the Eng Bee Tin Binondo Branch from August 23 to September 30, 2013. As an added treat, visitors who have their photo taken will get a free mooncake, and the photo with the most likes will get a chance to win 1000 pesos worth of gift certificate from Eng Bee Tin.
The Guinness World Record for largest mooncake in the world was set by members of the Toronto Mid Autumn Festival Committee. It measured 4.41 m (14.5 feet) in length, was 2.74 meters (9 feet) wide, and weighed in at 2.28 tonnes (5,033.80 pounds). The cake was displayed at Dragon City Shopping Centre, Toronto, Canada on 29 September 2001. However, it is said that the largest mooncake ever was made in Shenyang, China on August 2007. It weight 13 tonnes (28660 pounds), had a diameter of 8.15 meters (26.7 feet) and had a height of 20 centimeters. All in the largest mooncake ever had a total surface area of 52 square meters, larger than most two-bedroom condominium units in Manila.
Traditionally known as the mid-autumn festival, the mooncake festival is the second biggest festival in China, right after the Chinese New Year celebration. It is a 3-day celebration which begins on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Chinese lunar calendar. The day is also known as the Moon Festival, when the moon is supposed to be roundest and brightest. This is where the mooncake comes from as the special food to celebrate the occasion. This year, the mid-autumn festival is set to be celebrated from September 19-21, 2013.
Aside from traditional flavors black mongo, white mongo, and lotus, Eng Bee Tin also sells mooncakes in their famous ube flavor. Not stopping there, their innovative minds have also come up with very Filipino flavors such as pandan and langka. Their latest creation? The snow rose lotus mooncake.
Priced competitively starting from 120 pesos, Eng Bee Tin mooncakes have this nice floral pattern on top and come in dandy tin cans. Each mooncake is individually wrapped and has a non-edible moisture absorbent which makes it ideal as a gift, souvenir, or pasalubong.
Eng Bee Tin Binondo Branch is located at 628 Ongpin Street Binondo Manila.
