Woodstock. Live Aid. Few musical festivals aimed at creating solidarity through music create global appeal, worldwide sensation and massive unconditional support. But one such altruistic driven effort is on its way to stardom. Environmental concerns such as global warming, rising fuel prices and energy crises have brought the issue of the world to center stage. Literally. It’s already hit theatres – An Inconvenient Truth – and now already hit the concert scene in a big way. On the last Earth Day Jam 2012, the whole world jammed for the benefit of Mother Earth. Just short of holding hands across the world, this feat promises to create more noise for environmental conservation than an un-recycled tin can. From Los Angeles to New York, France to Israel, Earth day concerts big and small are being coordinated and endorsed by Earth Day Network, a global arm for Earth Day programs and events. Taguig is no exception as Earth Day Jam 2012 hit 9th Ave., Bonifacio High St., Bonifacio Global City last April 28, 2012.
This worldwide concerted effort aims to teach the significance of each and every person in this goal of preservation, conservation and sustainable existence. Practical steps and ways to prevent environment degradation become part of the show much like in the Taguig version of Earth Day concerts worldwide. It can be as pressing as worldwide environmental effects on the world or as simple as Reduce-Reuse-Compose. Whatever the case, these concerts create an impact in advocating key issues, most of which escape us on an everyday basis. A couple of “wake-up call” realizations thanks to Earth Day Jam 2012:
- One pint of motor oil dumped into a storm drain can create a one-acre oil slick on open water. Drain the used oil into a clean milk jug using a funnel. Take it to one of the many oil-recycling centers in the area. Every gallon of oil you recycle saves 42 gallons in crude oil.
- Did you know that toilets are the most common source of household water use? A leaking toilet can waste more than 150 gallons per day! Although you may not see or hear water running, your toilet may have a silent leak. To test for a silent leak, drop a little food coloring into the tank. Wait for about 20 minutes, and don’t flush. If the food coloring appears in the toilet bowl, your toilet has a leak. These leaks are easy to fix with parts from you local hardware store – make the repair and save water and money
- At the office, each of use can do a few simply things to help conserve energy. Start by turning the lights off when you leave the room for more than a few minutes. Do not leave electric heaters on when not required. Turn off your computer, monitor and lights when you go home for the day. Dress yourself for variations in indoor temperatures. And if you’re the last person out at night, turn off the lights, printers, and photocopiers.
Complete with a rock-star studded bill, a complete representation of all music genres, this unified effort at creating environmental awareness took its twelfth run by taking it to the streets. Bonifacio High St,. This marathon which last more or less six hours brought advocacy to a new level. This project was spearheaded by Lou Bonnevie of Dimitri Productions and presented by the local government of Taguig in line with the city’s campaign to create awareness towards the environment. Another presenter of the concert was DENR along with various organizations, NGOs and corporate sponsors. This show had a lineup of 14 of the hottest artists today. Artists that rocked BGC were Kjwan, Imago, Bloomfields, Noel Cabangon, Nina, Juris, Sino Sikat, Tanya Markova, Mayonnaise, Peace Pipe, True Faith, Radio Active Sago Project, Nyko Maca & Gafeiera and Lou Bonnevie, the whole music scene was involved; truly a testament to the massive support Earth Day received both on a local and global scale.
Earth Day Jam 2012 taught few things about how you can make the world a better place in your own way. Earth Day Jam 2012 is a special project of Dimitri Productions in partnership with the local government of Taguig in association with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
